AN INTERVIEW WITH BETH ROBERTSHAW

  • When did you start dancing?
I was 3-years-old and my sister was dancing so I did also. I started at Betty Collins School of dance in Pittsburgh. The studio was in Betty’s basement. My first dance was to, “Oh, you beautiful doll.”

  • When you were young did you have other favorite activities?
I was always in my leotard dancing.

  • Do you have a professional dancer you admired the most?
    Savion Glover

  • Which choreographer impacts you the most?
    Andy Blankenbuehler

  • Tell us what you love about your job. (Miss Liz says answer without crying…)
The kids. (Miss Beth’s eyes are tearing up.)

  • What is your dream vacation?
    The Maldives

  • What would you be if you weren’t a dance teacher?
    A farmer or a lyricist

  • Do you have advice for your students?
Whether it is creative movement students or older dancers: keep going, push yourself because it is what you want, and surround yourself with positive people.

  • What is your favorite tree?
I love willow trees. But, I just brought Miss Liz a lemon tree from Anna Maria Island.

  • What is your favorite thing to do when you have free time?
Clean or go to a movie.

  • What would you do if you were stranded on a desert island?
    Cry

  • Who was your favorite teacher?
Buster Brown. He was very old and could barely move when I took his class. He sat in a chair and shuffled his feet around using a translator to demonstrate his steps because he was unable to dance. He loved it so much that he just could not stop teaching or giving of himself. It is why I love what I do.
